What Language Shall I Borrow # 3238

What language shall I borrow
To thank thee dearest friend
For this thy dying sorrow
Thy pity without end?
O make me thine forever
and should I fainting be
Lord let me never never
Outlive my love to thee
Thank you!

What Language Shall I Borrow

Artist Note: by Tim Botts
"The words of this hymn are attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux from the twelfth century. This is what calligraphers call an interlinear design because thank yous in various languages are interspersed between lines of the hymn. I enjoyed writing thank you in a style associated with each national background. The beauty of saying thank you to each other is eclipsed by our gratitude to the Savior."
